Beyoncé fans make death threats against Nicole Curran, wife of Warriors owner Joe Lacob: report - The Mercury News

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 02:52 PM PDT

The Beyhive needs to take it down a few notches when it comes to Nicole Curran.

That being said, my real name is Joe Schmoe, and not that nom de plume that you see on top of this article.

Curran, the wife of Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob, said she has been harassed online by Beyoncé's faithful and rabid fans and as a result has disabled one of her social media accounts, according to ESPN senior writer Ramona Shelburne. The harassment, she said, included death threats.

"Just spoke to Nicole Curran … about the 'incident' with Beyoncé last night. She was in tears," Shelburne tweeted. "Said she had been getting death threats on social media all night this morning she disabled her IG account to make it stop."

Curran's crime? She spoke to Bey's husband Jay-Z as hip-hop's power couple sat court-side as guests of the Dubs' power couple during Wednesday night's NBA Finals game between the Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Videos and photos showed Curran chatting it up with Jay-Z, with Beyoncé sitting in between them. Some of Beyoncé's fans thought she gave Curran some side eye.

So the Beyhive went on the attack in defense of their queen. Her fans are particularly touchy about Jay-Z, who has admitted to being unfaithful to his wife in the past.

Shelburne provided more details from Curran with follow-up tweets.

Curran told Shelburne that she had asked Jay-Z and Beyoncé if they wanted drinks. (For the record Beyoncé just wanted water, while Jay-Z opted for a vodka soda.)

The noise from the Oracle Arena crowd prevented her from hearing Jay-Z's beverage of choice, so she leaned in closer. That's when the camera caught Beyoncé supposedly giving Curran a dirty look.

That was not the case, insisted Curran.

"There was no hostility," she told Shelburne. "I was trying to be a good hostess. I've never experienced cyber bullying like this. I can't believe our players go through this. That kids go through this."

Curran said she had not been aware of any controversy until she arrived home from the game and received texts from friends telling her about the online backlash.

Curran said that Beyoncé and Jay-Z had been her and Lacob's court-side guests three or four times prior to Wednesday's game.

Jay-Z is making money moves.

Forbes announced Monday that Jay-Z has become the first hip-hop artist to rack up a billion-dollar fortune, thanks to lucrative investments in real estate, art, liquor and businesses like Uber.

The accomplishment is a far cry from his humble beginnings. Jay-Z (real name: Shawn Carter) was a drug dealer in his hometown of Brooklyn before creating his own label in 1996, Roc-A-Fella Records, from which he released his debut album "Reasonable Doubt."

Since then, the rapper-turned-mogul has earned 14 No. 1 albums, 22 Grammy awards and over $500 million in pre-tax earnings, according to Forbes.

His money comes from far more than music.

Since launching Armand de Brignac (which Jay-Z owns 100% of) in his 2006 video "Show Me What You Got," the champagne company is estimated to now be worth $310 million. His cognac D'Ussé, a joint venture with Bacardi, is worth $100 million.

Jay-Z has $220 million in cash and investments, including a stake in Uber worth an estimated $70 million, which he originally purchased for $2 million.

His streaming service Tidal – which was launched in 2015 with the help of celebrity investors, including wife Beyoncé –  is estimated by Forbes to be worth $100 million.

"I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man."

The rapper has accumulated $75 million from his entertainment company, Roc Nation, which represents top artist and athletes like Rihanna and Kevin Durant. His own music catalog is estimated to be worth $75 million alone.

As for Jay-Z's impressive art collection? $70 million.

"I bought some artwork for 1 million / 2 years later, that (expletive) worth 2 million / Few years later, that (expletive) worth 8 million / I can't wait to give this (expletive) to my children."

He also picked up a $88 million Bel Air estate in 2017.

In 2018, Jay-Z tied for fifth place on Forbes' list of wealthiest stars with Kylie Jenner. The 21-year-old makeup mogul crossed the billionaire barrier in March.

Rihanna tops Forbes rich list thanks to Fenty make-up - BBC News

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 09:04 AM PDT

Although Rihanna hasn't released an album in more than three years - it's clear the work, work, work, work, work she's putting into her other business ventures is paying off.

The singer is the richest female musician in the world according to Forbes' annual rich list.

RiRi has an estimated fortune of $600m (£471m) with the bulk of that coming from her Fenty beauty range.

She's overtaken Madonna and Beyonce, who previously topped the list.

You could be forgiven for forgetting Rihanna even makes music - her last studio album Anti came out in 2016.

However, the 31-year-old has been putting her efforts into her beauty, lingerie and clothing ranges.

Rihanna - real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty - launched Fenty Beauty in September 2017 and it's estimated it racked up sales of $100m (£78m) in its first few weeks.

Forbes estimates that the company generated $570m (£448m) last year.

Experts say Rihanna's invested her money wisely.

"Globally the entire beauty industry is worth $480bn (£377bn) - in 2018 the UK market was valued at $17bn (£13bn)," says Hannah Symons, global beauty manager at Euromonitor International.

Hannah's job is to track the growth of the beauty industry - looking for trends.

"Rihanna's success clearly doesn't come off the back of the music although that's how she initially gained fame.

"It's all about her relevance and how she resonates with customers online. She's very connected to her fans through social media and she's always updating them on the newest products and things like launch dates," Hannah adds.

'Authenticity'

As well as her beauty range, Rihanna also has a lingerie line and recently made history by becoming the first woman to have a clothing range with French company Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH).

Hannah thinks part of Rihanna's success is she's appealing to a very wide audience.

"A lot of the people buying her products are not people who were buying her music. Rihanna has been around for 15 years but the people buying her products are aged 16-19, so wouldn't have been around when she started making music.

"And it's not just because she caters for darker skin tones either, she also caters for people at the paler end of the spectrum. And it's this inclusive element that makes her stand out.

Hannah says she's also been wise partnering with a high street retailer, making her products more accessible.

  • Madonna - £448m
  • Celine Dion - £350m
  • Beyonce - £314m

Image caption Kylie Jenner's beauty range is projected to break the $1bn threshold

Reality TV star Kylie Jenner, YouTuber Zoella and Kim Kardashian-West have all successfully launched beauty products too but Hannah Symons says that a celebrity putting their name to something doesn't guarantee it'll be a success.

"We see it a lot in fragrances. Look at Beyonce for example, who is one of the biggest stars in the world. We saw her put her name to a fragrance but it didn't do that well.

"And that's because it probably wasn't inherent in the personality or values of Beyonce. What Rihanna has done is let her products reflect her values and her personality."

Hannah says skincare is projected to be the biggest growth area of the beauty industry - so it's no surprise both Rihanna and Kylie Jenner have recently trademarked products with the word "skincare" in the name.

And with Rihanna's earnings expected to keep growing - her day job might be as a musician - but guess you can't fault her for not rushing back into the studio.

Doesn't sound like she's struggling to pay the bills...

Inside the billionaire lifestyle of Jay-Z who has £91m mansions, spends £78k on boozy nights out and splashed - The Sun

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 04:34 AM PDT

HE WAS famously raised in a poverty-stricken New York ghetto and turned to rap to escape a life of drugs and violence.

And this week, Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, has become the first billionaire in hip hop after striking gold with investments in music, property, fashion and tech.

According to a new report released by Forbes, Jay-Z has taken the crown as the world's richest rapper following a two-year battle with P Diddy in the race to accumulate their first billion.

The rise in fortune of the 49-year-old husband of Beyonce is all the more impressive given his deprived start in life.

He was raised on the notorious Marcy Houses projects in Brooklyn by a single mum after his dad left when he was 11, survived being shot at, lost friends to death and jail, and famously dealt crack cocaine which he credits with honing his future business nous.

"I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer," he once told Vanity Fair.

In the ultimate rag-to-riches tale, it was music that helped propel him out a dire situation, and he went from selling CDs from his car to founding the hugely successful Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995, selling over 100m records and nabbing 22 Grammy Awards.

Alongside this, Jay-Z founded entertainment company Roc Nation, created his own champagne brand, bought music streaming service Tidal, and has invested in tech start-ups like Uber.

And the man who once rapped "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man" certainly knows how to spend the fruits of his labour - splashing his cash on a £69m mansion and a pair of £2k animal skin trainers.

The rapper splits his time between three stunning homes in the United States.

There's the £69m Bel-Air home with eight bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, four pools, a 15-car garage, bulletproof windows and a recording studio.

Spends £78k on champagne on boozy nights out

The music mogul has become known for his lavish partying.

In February 2018, he spent £10,000 on dinner in New York for the birthday of his friend Juan "OG" Perez, the president of Roc Nation Sports, before paying for the £70,000 bill - which comprised of 40 bottles of his own Ace of Spades champagne brand - at a bar afterwards, and left an £8,600 tip for the staff.

But in 2011, he footed a £192,000 bill for his Watch The Throne listening party, and in 2013 spent £76,800 on an apparently ordinary night boozing at an Atlanta nightclub.

He also likes to dine at some of the most exclusive restaurants, including Le Cirque in New York - which invented the crème brûlée - and where a steak costs £44 - which is pretty cheap for him...

Real-life Model for 'Princess Tiana' Dies - Voice of America

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 02:55 PM PDT

Leah Chase, who died this month, was an American civil rights activist and chef in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Her restaurant is well-known. It serves people from all walks of life, from local men and women to famous personalities, such as baseball player Hank Aaron and singer Beyoncé. Two other customers, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, served as president of the United States.

But people who never visited the restaurant likely still know Chase, sort of. She was a main inspiration for Princess Tiana in the Disney movie "The Princess and the Frog."

Leah Lange

Chase's name at birth was Leah Lange. She was born in 1923 in Louisiana. At that time, many places in the southern states were segregated. In other words, people were divided by race and skin color. In her town, children with light skin went to one school; children with dark skin went to another. The schooling for children with dark skin stopped after six years.

So her parents sent their daughter to New Orleans, the largest city in the state, to complete her education at a Catholic high school. A report in The New York Times newspaper says she was a gifted student and finished at age 16.

Soon after, she began working as a waitress at a top restaurant for white people in the city's historic French Quarter. There, she became interested in fine dining – high quality food in a beautiful space.

Dooky Chase

In time, Leah Lange married a musician whose family owned a restaurant. He – and the restaurant – were both named after his father, Dooky Chase. Dooky Chase's at that time was an easygoing shop where black people could buy sandwiches and lottery tickets.

But Leah Chase had other ideas. She added white tablecloths and Creole food that mixed French, Spanish, African and other traditions.

In time, Dooky Chase's became the city's first top restaurant for black visitors and locals. To many, it was a place to celebrate special events: a winning sports team, success in school or a night with someone special, a writer from New Orleans told The New York Times.

It was also a place where civil rights leaders, such as Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King, Junior, came. They were fighting for equality among people of all races and colors.

Dooky Chase's became known as a place where activists could meet and plan campaigns. The restaurant broke local segregation laws by letting black and white customers sit together.

Chase said simply she did what she thought she had to do.

Tiana

In the early 2000s, a group of writers were seeking ideas for a movie about a princess in New Orleans. They easily found Leah Chase, says a report in The Oprah Magazine.

Chase said she spoke to the film's writers for hours about her life. In time, the Disney movie "The Princess and the Frog" told the story of a hard-working African-American waitress who dreams of owning a restaurant.

"Now everybody wants to be Tiana," Chase told the magazine in 2010. "I think it's fantastic."

Leah Chase continued to work and serve others well into old age. She published cookbooks and collected paintings by African-American artists. She met with customers and supervised the restaurant's kitchen. She said food helped people feel better.

In 2015, she told The Associated Press, "… Sometimes people will come in and they're tired. And just a little plate of food will make people happy."

Leah Chase died on June 1 at the age of 96. She and her husband of 70 years had 4 children, 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Earlier this week, Chase's family released a statement to reporters. They called Chase a supporter of civil liberties and a "believer in the Spirit of New Orleans."
